Vajradhara

20th Century

This is a copy of a 14th century rupa now in the Museum Rietberg Zurich.

We commissioned this reproduction in Patan, Nepal, from a photograph taken from the book The Circle of Bliss: Buddhist Meditational Art by John C. Huntington and Dina Bandel, © The Columbus Museum of Art. Please note that the image in the book was inadvertently published backwards!

In this book, Professor Huntington states: "Vajradhara is the primordial Adi Buddha, the highest manifestation of enlightenment, a visual reification of the truth-body (dharma kaya).  His images convey the universal state of enlightenment through the vehicle of the bliss-body (sambhoga kaya) that communicates to practitioners the transcendent truth body. This purely realizational state is the essence of every Buddha and is, by definition, inexplicable and unknowable except through the direct experience of enlightenment through meditation."

Hand cast in copper, with fire-gilt "antique" 22 karat gold finish and blue polychrome hair. Ornaments extensively inlaid with turquoise.
