Burmese style nipple gongs have a solid, unique structure that results in a distinctive, musical timbre. These gongs are renown to be made in a meditative tradition and seem to possess a consciousness of their own. They can be played traditionally with a gong mallet, but unlike any other gong, the boss can be played manually to produce a strong, melodious mid-tone that sounds like the fundamental of a singing bowl. We call this technique “pawing the gong”. This technique is raises the Chi and tunes the body at the same time.
About the Sound Sample
You will hear the gong being struck 3 times, in approximately six second intervals, with a medium wool-padded gong mallet; twice beside the nipple, with the final strike on the top part of the nipple and sustaining to the end for about 30 seconds.
