Description

Rare Antique Lingam Singing Bowl

  • 5 1/2″ Diameter;
  • Extra-Thick;
  • Fundamental tone: G 389 Hz. (near-concert pitch);
  • Rim tone: C# 1109 Hz. (concert pitch);
  • Hand-forged, mixed-alloy bronze;
  • Circa 16th Century;
  • Bowl type: “Lingam”
  • NOTE: This bowl has a minute pinhole in the very center of the lingam. It is not unusual for antique bowls to have pinoles, and due to its location in the basin, the pinhole does not affect the sound or stability of the bowl at all. This bowl is fully covered under the terms of our 100% satisfaction guarantee.

About the Sound Sample

First, we strike the bowl on its upper outside edge with a short-handle 25mm Himalayan hardwood Tibetan-wool padded mallet. Next, we play the rim tone around the outside rim with the 22mm leather-padded mallet. Lastly, we isolate the fundamental tone with the leather end of the 25mm leather-padded mallet.

Lingam

Perhaps the rarest, and most prized, of all the Tibetan/Himalayan type singing bowls, this antique Manipuri Lingam singing bowl has a conical protrusion coming out of the center of its interior basin. This type of bowl is called “Lingam” because the protrusion’s shape is associated with the phallus worshiped by Hindu Shaivites. The protrusion is often encircled by a multiple-ring pattern, which in the Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions is thought to represent Mt. Kailash and the practice of circumambulating this most sacred mountain in western Tibet. This uniquely shaped bowl is a Manipuri construction with a Lingam center basin.
